If you are using Dreamweaver to upload files, here's a bit of information that I think will probably help smooth things out in the future.

Our web directory structure is as follows:

Your base login directory contains a directory called www/ and the default file that is referenced when a web browser points to
http://www.your-name.com/ is the index.html (or .htm or .shtml) in your www/ directory. So far as the web browser is concerned, as I'm sure you know already, the www/ directory is the root directory of your site.

To make sure that Dreamweaver knows this, open Dreamweaver and go to
Site -Define Sites...

then click on your current site in the interface that pops up and click on the Edit button.

In the next interface that pops up, the site definition interface, select Web Server Info from the column on the left. The settings should be as follows: 

FTP Host: your-name.com (replace with your domain)
Host Directory: www/
Login: -------- (replace with your login)
Password: -------- (replace with your password)
